Publishing Normally
How a Work would be published traditionally under the Ransom model.
- The Holder develops their Work, either in privacy or with public feedback and help.
- When the Holder releases the Work, it is covered by a Proprietary License of their choice. This Proprietary License also contains legal Clauses controlling how the Work will be automatically freed to the public. And to guarantee honesty, the Holder releases a sample of the Work as Proof.
- No matter the specific Proprietary License, the Clauses includes a Ransom Total to be collected by the Holder. The Collection Methods to be used are also specified in the Clauses.
- The Clauses also specifiy a Free License that the Work is to be automatically re-released under.
- The Holder can sell or otherwise distribute copies of the Work as their chosen Proprietary License allows, seeking funds to go towards the specified Total, either as licensing fees, sponsorships of the project, or as simple gifts or donations.
- Once the specified Total of money has been collected in full, the Work is automatically re-licensed through copyright law to the above specified Free License. This event takes no action on the part of the Holder, it happens instantly.
- The public now has a newly freed copyrighted Work to use and modify as usual; the Holder has been fairly compensated for work done, not copies sold; and the Liberators of the Work have contributed to the community and can use that to their advantage (such as in marketing and public relations).
