What about Product Quality?
What about initial product quality and the "more eyes equals better code" policy?
The issue of how open the Work should be before the Ransom is paid should remain up to the Holders. However, free access for non-profit and contributing organizations can help increase the user base and provide incentives for feedback. The users/feedback ratio may be greater with some projects if the user has put money up for a copy of the Work. There is also the option of alternating between open and ransom releases to increase contributions and feedback, although this should be done with extreme care and foresight. Free access can be provided as an incentive or compensation for patches, code, and feedback.
